Nya Joy Trusty
The Heart Behind the Vision
Welcome! My name is Nya Joy Trusty, and I'm excited about the possibility of being part of your healing journey.
Born and raised in Colorado, I'm a counselor who believes deeply in the power of creativity, movement and connection as meaningful tools for healing at every age. Drawing inspiration from the collectivist principles of Pan-African and Indigenous traditions, I believe healing does not happen in isolation, but through connection with ourselves, one another, and our communities.
My approach to counseling bridges evidence-based therapeutic practices with creativity, holistic wellness, and somatic awareness, honoring the connection between mind, body, and spirit. Beyond the therapy room, I'm also a poet, spoken word artist, and active member of several culturally affirming spaces throughout the Denver community.
My professional experience spans clinical, educational, and community settings, supporting children, adolescents, and adults. In the therapeutic space, I draw from Gestalt therapy, narrative therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed parts work. I approach each therapeutic relationship with curiosity, compassion, and a deep respect for the unique experiences and perspectives each person brings.
Above all, I believe you are the expert on your own experience. I strive to create a space where all parts of you are welcome, without judgment or expectation. My role is to walk alongside you as you deepen your understanding of yourself, reconnect with your inner wisdom, and discover new ways of relating to your story.
I look forward to being part of your journey back home to yourself.
My Approach To Counseling
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing. Together, we'll explore what feels meaningful, supportive, and authentic to you.
-
Learning to listen to the wisdom of your body and recognize how emotions and experiences show up physically.
-
Exploring the stories you've carried and creating space to reclaim your own narrative.
-
Getting to know the different parts of yourself with curiosity rather than judgment.
-
Bringing curiosity to your present-moment experiences, feelings, and patterns.
-
Identifying thought patterns and developing practical tools to support everyday well-being.
-
Making space for expression, exploration, and connection beyond words alone.
Educational And Professional Background

My undergraduate years at CU Boulder were filled with learning, community, and creativity. I had the privilege of serving as president of the Black Student Alliance for two years, an experience that deepened my love for community building and culturally affirming spaces.
Outside of psychology, one of my favorite parts of college was African dance! I loved the class so much that I took it more than three times, if that tells you anything. Boulder will always hold a special place in my heart, and I still visit often.

Returning to Denver for my master's felt like coming home to my adolescent stomping grounds. Throughout my graduate journey, I've gained extensive experience in case management, behavioral health, and creative writing pedagogy with youth and adults.
These experiences have shaped my belief in the importance of accessible, culturally responsive mental health care and reinforced my passion for integrating creativity, movement, and connection into the healing process.

As a member of Moonshot's ninth cohort, I'm developing a creative, trauma-informed solution centered on Black and Brown adolescent girls and young women who have experienced adversity.
My work focuses on creating spaces where young people can express themselves, explore and process difficult experiences through creativity, and build meaningful connections with safe, supportive adults. At its heart, this work is about helping young women recognize their own voices, reclaim their narratives, and discover the possibilities available to them.

Joyful Roots Counseling is my newest baby, and one that has been a long time coming!
This practice is the culmination of my love for counseling, creativity, community, and holistic wellness. I've dreamed of building a space where evidence-based therapeutic practices can coexist with storytelling, play, movement, and the wisdom we carry within ourselves.
I'm so excited to bring my unique style, experiences, and expertise into this space and to share in the meaningful work of healing and growth with you.
